We tested our service based on a complete review of every page. Our approach combined automated scanning tools with structured manual testing to ensure coverage of all WCAG 2.2 Level AA success criteria. The tools used are described below.
Accessibility Insights for Web
We used Accessibility Insights for Web, a free browser extension, to run both automated checks and a guided manual testing checklist against every page. The tool maps each check directly to the relevant WCAG 2.2 success criterion and provides pass/fail tracking throughout the review. Automated checks covered areas such as colour contrast, image text alternatives, form labels, and structural markup. Manual checks covered keyboard-only navigation, focus order, error identification, screen orientation, and other criteria that automated tools cannot verify.
axe DevTools
We used axe DevTools, a browser-based accessibility testing tool developed by Deque Systems, to perform automated accessibility scans on every page. axe DevTools identifies violations of WCAG 2.2 success criteria with zero false positives and provides detailed guidance on each issue found, including the specific criterion failed and recommended remediation steps. Results from axe DevTools were used alongside Accessibility Insights for Web to ensure comprehensive automated coverage.
NVDA screen reader
We used NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access), a free and widely used open-source screen reader for Windows, to manually test every page with assistive technology. Testing with NVDA verified that all page content, interactive elements, form controls, error messages and navigation landmarks are correctly announced and operable for users who rely on a screen reader. NVDA was used in conjunction with a web browser to reflect real-world usage conditions.
Colour Contrast Analyser
We used the Colour Contrast Analyser, a free desktop application developed by TPGi, to manually verify that text and background colour combinations across every page meet the WCAG 2.2 AA minimum contrast ratios. This tool was used to test standard text (minimum ratio of 4.5:1) and large text (minimum ratio of 3:1), as required by WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast – Minimum). Testing was carried out across a range of foreground and background colour combinations present on the site, including interactive elements such as buttons and links.
W3C HTML Validator
We used the W3C Markup Validation Service to validate the HTML of every page against published web standards. Valid, well-structured HTML is a foundation of accessible web content, as errors in markup can cause unpredictable behaviour with assistive technologies such as screen readers. This supports WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.1 (Parsing). Any validation errors identified were reviewed and resolved prior to this statement being published.
WCAG 2.2 Checklist (WebAIM)
Throughout testing we referenced the WebAIM WCAG 2 Checklist as a structured guide to evaluating every success criterion at levels A and AA. The checklist describes how each criterion should be met and links to the W3C specification, providing a consistent framework for recording pass or fail outcomes across all pages.
